The Guide To Halo Hair Extensions For Short Hair

You probably came to this article wondering if you can even wear a halo hair extension if your hair is short. The answer is a little more complex than just a yes or no, so I want to explain how you can decide if a halo is going to be the best option for you, if you have short hair, and give you some of my best tips when it comes to wearing a halo with short hair.

How Short is Too Short For A Halo?

Before I explain what length of hair is too short for a halo, you have to understand the basics how a halo sits on the head. A halo extension sits slightly different for everyone depending on comfort and head shape, but generally, the halo needs to rest on the middle to lower back of your head. The halo extension also needs to be “locked in” in order for it to stay in place. This is done by the wire in the front, but also your natural hair above and below it. If there is not enough hair surrounding the halo extension, it could potentially slip off.

Not only do you risk the chance of it falling off, it can be more challenging to hide wearing the halo with short hair.Your natural hair needs to be at least 4 inches long in order to properly conceal the top of the halo. You may still struggle with getting a really good blend which then I would recommend adding some blend in pieces to wear with your halo. Ideally I recommend waiting until your natural hair length has reached your shoulders.

Is There A Short Length Hair Halo?

The shortest length is 12”, which typically hits about a few inches past collarbone length. Where the length will hit can vary based on your height, which is something we make sure to go over in a virtual consultation. Here is a photo of me wearing a blonde 12” halo just to give you an idea on what the length looks like.

Maybe you have a shoulder length cut and want to wear a halo to add thickness. A 12” halo can be custom cut to match the length of your hair. When I have a virtual consultation with someone wanting a short halo I will have them measure about 3 fingers width above their ears to the tops of shoulders so I am able to cut the halo so its the perfect length to blend with your natural hair.

Can You Wear A Long Halo With Short Hair?

If you are concerned about getting the best blend, I recommend only adding an extra 4-5 inches to your natural length. However, every person and situation is different which is why I like to see what your naturally hair looks like and make a personal recommendation tailored to you and your hair goals.

If your hair is short but thick, I generally recommend a layered halo because you need that extra density to blend your hair with the halo. If your hair is short and thin, I recommend a non-layered halo because its going to give you the most natural result with balance thickness from roots to ends.

Regardless of your hair density, if your short hair is blunt, it is going to be more difficult to blend with a halo. If the ends are layered, feathered or wispy, the halo is going to blend a lot easier.

Tips For Wearing A Halo With Short Hair

  1. If the ends of your hair are blunt, taking out some of the bulk towards the bottom will help hide the line of where your hair ends and the halo begins.

  2. Add in some blend-ins underneath and/or around the front and to conceal the shorter pieces that tend to pop out, like i did in this video

  3. pair a halo with a fall if you are wanting to add maximum length and thickness to your hair. You can see me demo a halo and fall here

Other Extension Options For Short Hair

If you are wanting to go with an extension method that you can take on and off, I still think a halo is your best bet even with short hair, and adding in the blend in pieces can really help if you are struggling to get a good result. Its faster and easer than opting for a full head of clip ins.

Another option would be to get sew in wefts. They can be custom placed on your head to help you get a really great blend and unlike a halo where you only have one row of hair, with sew ins you will typically have 2-3, sometimes 4 rows of hair. So its more spread out over your entire head which can help with the extensions blending in as well.
